How do I make an ebook?

  • Well, first you have to have a book that you want to make into an ebook. This book will need to be in an electronic file format. That is the base requirement.

  • Next, you will need the tools to convert your book file to the specific file type that is required for a particular reader. For some readers this process is very simple - for others it is more complex.

  • To learn more about creating the ebook of the file type you are interested in, select the link under the Making Ebooks link category on the left for that file type.

  • BUT WAIT! Before you do, take a gander at the rest of this page for some other tips on getting prepared!

What is your Target?
  • It's good to know ahead of time what file types (i.e. what devices) you want your ebook to be available on.

  • If in doubt, I suggest Adobe Acrobat pdf and then Microsoft Reader lit. Why? Because these are the easiest formats to produce, and...

  • Adobe Acrobat is everywhere! Although I don't like it quite as well for ebooks, it certainly does the job.

  • And Microsoft Reader, well if you have Microsoft Word then Reader is a piece of cake.

  • Mobipocket is next on my list. It is also pretty simple. Palm by fair takes the most work (although its really not hard - just requires some time and a little thought).

  • Finally, it is good to have a cover for your ebook if possible. If you're not sure how to go about this, check out the creating cover art link here and look at the cover requirements for each of the formats you wish to support.
The result
  • By taking a little time and following the instructions on this site (or elsewhere if there was not enough info here for you!) you will soon have created your own ebook.

  • Maybe even one with your own cover art!

  • And once it is done, you and others can enjoy it on your PC or on any of the handheld devices that support the format(s) you have chosen for your ebook!
