What is an ebook device anyway?

  • For starters, ebooks are electronic books - or books that are actually a computer file. When I talk about ebook devices I don't cover what we normally think of as computers.

  • The ebook devices I cover are all handheld devices - the most important difference being their small size.

  • But ebooks can be read on most computers regardless of their size. In fact, a common ebook format that is available - the pdf file format - can be used on all computers and operating systems.

Why an ebook device?
  • ebooks devices are a convienent way to take your books with you wherever you may go.

  • You can have multiple books with you all on a device that is smaller than a single standard printed paperback book.
What device do I want?
  • That's a simpler question to answer than it may seem. Most device formats are supported by all of the quality ebook publishers - so format should not be an issue.

  • If all that you want to do is read books - then the cheaper the device the better. Aim for the low-end Palm units, the Franklin ebookman or maybe a refurbished unit.

  • If other features such as contacts, email, games and personal software applications are important then you need to look at the higher end Palms or the PocketPCs. Make a list of desired features then compare devices!
